Welcome to Yugiri-An

Tea

With my Sensei at the opening of Yugiri-An

Yugiri-An, Tea Hut of Evening Mist

My small (two tatami mat) tea room has been years in the making. My husband and I transformed a loft space in our home into an intimate and serene place for tea. My Sensei, Marjorie Yap (tea name Soya, of Issoan Tea) came to the seki biraki, the tea room opening, and named the space for me. She also made the lovely calligraphy behind us (it says Yugiri-An).

I study with the Urasenke school, which invites non-Japanese students to embrace the Do (or the way, I think of this as the heart), Gaku (the study, I think of this as the mind) and Jitsu (the practice, I think of this as the body) of tea. The most important part, for me, is the school’s mission of spreading peace through tea.

I hope that my small tea room can be a place of peace for myself and those who join me, and that we may emanate peace into the world.
